"Which PTO fits my truck?" — the answer changes with the vehicle class, because the transmission, the duty cycle and the mounting space all change. Here is how the main vehicle types differ.
Light trucks
Light-duty gearboxes have smaller PTO openings and lower torque capacity. Compact, lightweight PTOs — often 6-bolt designs — pair with small gear pumps for tippers, cranes and refrigeration units. Package size and weight usually matter more than ultimate torque.
Heavy trucks
Heavy-duty manual transmissions accept 8- and 10-bolt PTOs with substantial torque ratings. Constant-mesh designs suit continuous loads; mechanical or air shift suits intermittent engagement. Verify the transmission model first — the same truck can carry different gearboxes across model years.
Dump trucks
Tipper duty means a pump running at full pressure for short, frequent cycles. Choose a PTO with torque headroom above the pump demand, and prefer air-shift engagement so the driver can operate the body from the cab.
Fire trucks and rescue vehicles
Fire apparatus demand absolute reliability: the PTO must engage instantly even after long idle periods. Constant-mesh PTOs with certified ratings and low-noise operation are the standard choice, often with redundant engagement monitoring.
Whatever the vehicle, the sequence is the same: identify the transmission model, confirm the opening and torque rating, then match the PTO. PFM maintains fitment data for the major gearbox families — send us your vehicle list and we will confirm the configurations.
